PEAPACK-GLADSTONE – About $40,000 will be given to deserving students this spring when the Van Doren Scholarship Committee makes its selections for the fifteenth year. Somerset County students who can demonstrate a strong incentive for learning may be qualified to receive these awards.
Peter Ellis Van Doren, a long-time resident of Peapack-Gladstone, left his estate to be used for scholarships. The Committee entrusted to administer the awards must show preference to residents of the Borough of Peapack and Gladstone; however, students living in other Somerset County municipalities are eligible as well.
While financial need is considered, these scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of achievement. Since the creation of the Van Doren scholarship program in 1995, the Committee has distributed more than $600,000 to deserving Somerset County students.
To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of Somerset County who is attending or planning to attend as a full-time student an accredited four-year college or university, a two-year college, or a post high school trade or nursing school. Students may apply during their senior year of high school and during each year of their post secondary school education. Students working on advanced degrees are not eligible.
Those interested in applying are encouraged to use the downloadable form now available at www.vandorenscholars.org. Applications have been mailed to the principal as well as the guidance department of each public and private secondary school in Somerset County as well as to the reference librarian of each public library in the County.
Individual application forms are available by writing to The Van Doren Scholarship, P.O. Box 584, Peapack, NJ 07977. All submitted applications must be postmarked no later than March 12, 2009.
