Applications Available for Van Doren Scholarships

Somerset County students may be eligible to receive a 2011 Van Doren Scholarship, the 16th year the awards have been given. Applications are available now. Since the creation of this scholarship in 1995, more than $700,000 has been distributed to deserving students throughout Somerset County.

PEAPACK-GLADSTONE – Somerset County students of high moral character who can demonstrate a strong incentive for learning may be eligible to receive a 2011 Van Doren Scholarship. Applications are now available for these awards, to be presented for the 16th time next spring. The Scholarship Committee anticipates having at least $40,000 to award in 2011. Since the creation of this scholarship in 1995, more than $700,000 has been distributed to deserving students throughout Somerset County.

In making its selections, the Committee must show preference to residents of Peapack-Gladstone. The Committee, however, may also award scholarships to students from other Somerset County communities. Last spring, sixteen scholarships totaling $45,000 were awarded, including five to Peapack-Gladstone students. While financial need is considered, the scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic achievement.

To be eligible, a candidate must be a Somerset County resident who is attending or planning to attend as a full-time student an accredited four-year college or university, a two-year college, or a post high school trade or nursing school. Students may apply during their senior year of high school and during any year of their post secondary school studies. Students working on advanced degrees are not eligible.

Those interested in applying are encouraged to use the application found at the Van Doren Scholarship website: http://www.vandorenscholars.org. A print copy of the application has been mailed to the guidance department of each public and private secondary school as well as the reference librarian of each public library in the Somerset County.

An individual application is also available by writing to The Van Doren Schorlarship, P.O. Box 584, Peapack, NJ 07977. The deadline for submitting a completed application is March 17, 2011.
